Types of dog coats and jackets
Within our dog clothing and accessories range, most of our coats are built around warmth, using soft fleece to hold heat against the body. A warm winter coat is the everyday choice for cold days, covering the back and chest where dogs lose heat fastest.

Choosing the right dog coat size
The right dog coat size matters more than breed. A coat that is too loose slips and snags, and one that is too tight rubs and restricts movement.
Rather than going by breed alone, measure your dog with a soft tape: the back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, the chest girth just behind the front legs, and the neck. Back length is the measurement to trust, because straps can adjust the girth but never the length.
The right coat follows those numbers for a small, medium or large dog, not the label on the size guide. Our range covers extra small coats for the tiniest companions and larger coats for broad-chested dogs, so there is a fit for most shapes. As a rule of thumb, you should be able to slide two fingers between the coat and your dog.
Dog coats with a built-in harness
Some of our coats do two jobs at once. Instead of layering a harness over the top or squeezing one underneath, these designs have a harness built in, or a sturdy D-ring on the back where a dog lead clips straight on.
It saves a step on the way out of the door and keeps everything sitting neatly in place on the walk. If your dog already wears a dog harness, look for a coat with an opening that leaves room for it underneath. Either way, you keep warmth and control in one handy layer.
What to look for in a dog coat
Beyond warmth, a few things separate a coat your dog will happily wear from one that ends up in a drawer. Coverage comes first: a back-only coat is quick to put on, while a full-body design protects more of a cold-sensitive dog.
A secure fastening keeps the coat in place when your dog runs, and enough room through the shoulders lets them move naturally.
It is also worth knowing the difference between water-resistant and waterproof. A water-resistant coat copes with a light drizzle, while heavy rain calls for a coat made specifically for wet weather, so always check what each one is designed to handle.
